Ninh Binh itinerary: one to three days

Ninh Binh is about 2 hours from Hanoi by road or rail, according to the national tourism authority, so it works as a day trip or as a stay of a few nights. The sights sit in a karst landscape south of the Red River delta: boat rides in Trang An and Tam Coc, the old capital of Hoa Lu, the hill climb at Mua Cave, Bai Dinh Pagoda and the nature reserves further out.

One day gives you two or three of these. Two days let you stay near the boats and add Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh. Three days add the national park and wetland. The plans below are suggestions, so swap days if the weather changes.

1 dayTrang An or Tam Coc boat, plus Hoa Lu or Mua Cave
2 daysNight in a homestay near Tam Coc or Trang An, boat and temples
3 daysAdd Cuc Phuong and Van Long for a nature day
Wide river with distant boats beneath steep green cliffs

Our picks: multi-day plans

Two 2-day tours combine Ha Long Bay; one leaves accommodation out so you book your own, while the other includes a night in a Ninh Binh homestay. The one-day Cuc Phuong and Van Long tour adds to a stay of several days in Ninh Binh.

One day from Hanoi

The classic shortcut.

If you only have one day, take a tour from Hanoi that combines a boat ride with Hoa Lu or Mua Cave. See our day trip from Hanoi page to compare options. A day gives you the highlights and little time to linger,.

Two days with a night in Tam Coc or Trang An

Homestays on the edge of both areas.

The tourism office describes homestays on the edges of both Tam Coc and Trang An, with cycling through villages and cooking with local people. Staying there means you start the boat rides early and avoid the drive in the middle of the day. Our where to stay guide compares the areas.

Day 1

Trang An boat trip, which takes about 3 hours on the longer routes and 1.5 to 2 hours on the short one. Number and course of the routes can change. Then Hoa Lu in the afternoon: see the Hoa Lu page.

Day 2

Tam Coc boat tour of about 2 hours, then Bich Dong and Mua Cave. See the Tam Coc page and the Mua Cave hike on our things to do page.

Boat trips run as a normal part of the visit. In storms and floods the authority can pause routes at short notice, so ask for the local status before your boat day.

Three days with Cuc Phuong and Van Long

Add a day for nature.

A third day opens up the nature side: the national park and the primate centre at Cuc Phuong, the wetland at Van Long, or the bird garden at Thung Nham. A day tour from Ninh Binh to Cuc Phuong and Van Long lists hotel pick-up and drop-off, a minivan, an English-speaking guide, entrance tickets, a Vietnamese lunch and water. Read the Cuc Phuong, Van Long and Thung Nham page for fees, and ask for the current status of cave and forest programmes before you plan them.

Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay in two days

Two combination tours from Hanoi.

Two tours join Ninh Binh with Ha Long Bay in two days. One lists a Hanoi Old Quarter pick-up and drop-off, a Ninh Binh day with Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave, then a Ha Long day with Sung Sot, Titop and Luon, plus a boat trip and two lunches. Accommodation in Hanoi is not included, and there is a 10 % surcharge on national days.

The other includes a homestay in Ninh Binh, four meals (two lunches, one dinner, one breakfast), the Trang An boat, an electric car at Bai Dinh and a Ha Long day. The single supplement is 15 USD, and the national day surcharge is 10 %. If you are choosing between Ninh Binh and Ha Long for a day trip, see the Ha Long day trip from Hanoi or the whole bay guide at Ha Long Bay.

Onward to Sapa and Hoi An

Other stops in Vietnam.

If Ninh Binh is one stop on a longer trip through the north, Sapa has its own guide for the mountains. For central Vietnam, see Hoi An.

Getting between the sights

Bike, tour vehicle or free bus.

Tours include a vehicle, and many visitors add a day on two wheels: see our cycling and motorbike page. A free heritage bus, reported on 24.07.2026, links Trang An, Bai Dinh and the Dong Chuong lake every 2 hours from 07:00 to 17:00. Ask on the day whether it runs and where it stops. For the journey from Hanoi and the airport, read getting there.
