What a day trip from Hanoi looks like
A Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi usually picks you up in the Old Quarter early in the morning, drives south for about 2 hours and then spends the day around Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Trang An. You return to Hanoi on the same day. The day tours offered here run from about 10 up to 13 hours, depending on the option.
Some tours cover many stops, others only a ticket and a shared boat. Read the inclusions of each tour instead of judging by the list of place names. A day tour suits you if you do not want to change hotels, but one day only fits a few main sights.

Two of these name Hoa Lu, Mua Cave or Tam Coc in their inclusions, while the remaining tour lists only an entrance fee, a shared boat and a buffet lunch. The scooter or jeep ride suits you if you want a motorised stretch.

A typical day tour from Hanoi to Ninh Binh
Most tours follow the same chain: Hoa Lu, a boat ride, Mua Cave and lunch. One day tour covers Hoa Lu, Tam Coc and Mua Cave with about 30 minutes of village cycling and a buffet lunch. Another adds Bich Dong pagoda, Hoa Lu entrance fees, a 1.5-hour Tam Coc boat ride, Mua Cave admission and a 2-hour scooter or Jeep ride through the countryside. A third includes the entrance fee, a shared boat, a buffet lunch and an air-conditioned vehicle. Open the page of each tour to see which stops are really part of the programme.
Trang An or Tam Coc boat
A day tour usually includes one boat ride, at Trang An or Tam Coc. Some tours let you choose between the two when you book. At Trang An local residents row the boat through several caves, and the tourism office describes the routes as about 3 hours long. At Tam Coc the boat takes roughly 2 hours on the Ngo Dong river. The boat ride in your tour can be shorter, so ask when you book. In a storm or flood the authority can pause routes at short notice, so check the local status before your day.
Hoa Lu, Mua Cave and Bai Dinh as stops
Hoa Lu takes you into the history from 968 to 1010, with its temples. Mua Cave has a stone stairway to the summit with a view over the valley, so bring comfortable shoes. Bai Dinh pagoda is part of only some tours, often with an electric car inside the complex, so check the inclusions.
What is included and what costs extra
The official price list updated 27 February 2026 gives these amounts: Hoa Lu 20,000 VND, Mua Cave 150,000 VND, Tam Coc 250,000 VND without the electric transfer and Trang An 300,000 VND including the boat. The electric car at Bai Dinh is 150,000 VND return from 15 February 2026. If a tour lists tickets among its inclusions you do not pay these amounts. If it does not, prepare cash in dong. Limousine van or standard bus
Some tours use a limousine or modern air-conditioned bus, and some let you choose the vehicle when you book. The pick-up area is usually the Hanoi Old Quarter. For guests staying outside it, one tour names a central meeting point and pick-up times from about 7:00 to 7:30, so confirm the address by message after booking. If you would rather travel on your own than on a tour, see Hanoi to Ninh Binh.
Ninh Binh or Ha Long for your day
If you are torn between two day trips from Hanoi, read about the day trip from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay. Ninh Binh suits rivers, rice fields and light walking, while Ha Long is a sea landscape. With two days you can combine both, see the Ninh Binh tours and the itinerary.

Ninh Binh day trip: frequently asked questions
Is one day from Hanoi enough for Ninh Binh?
One day is enough for a boat ride, Hoa Lu and Mua Cave. To add Bai Dinh, cycling or Cuc Phuong, stay at least one night. See the Ninh Binh itinerary.
Does the tour pick me up at my hotel?
Most tours pick up in the Hanoi Old Quarter. Guests staying outside it may be directed to another meeting point, so confirm the address and time after booking.
Do I pay entrance fees on top of the tour price?
It depends on the tour. Some list tickets among the inclusions, others do not. Read the inclusions and exclusions before you pay.
Can I go on my own by train instead of a tour?
Yes. Ninh Binh has its own railway station and the reference travel time is about 2 hours. See Hanoi to Ninh Binh.
