Where is Ninh Binh
Ninh Binh lies in northern Vietnam on the southern edge of the Red River Delta. The landscape is limestone karst with partly flooded valleys and waterways that run underground through caves. Most visitors come for Trang An, Tam Coc, Mua Cave, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh, and the trip from Hanoi takes about 2 hours by road or rail.
Since 1 July 2025 the province of Ninh Binh also includes the former provinces of Ha Nam and Nam Dinh, so the karst region on this site is only one part of it. The UNESCO listing from 2014 covers the Trang An Landscape Complex, not the whole province. This guide helps you pick the sights, plan the tickets and decide between going on your own and booking a tour.

Trang An or Tam Coc by boat
The two famous hand-rowed boat rides of the region.
At Trang An, local residents row the boats through several caves and past small temples on the water. At Tam Coc and Bich Dong, the boats follow the Ngo Dong river through three caves, and Bich Dong pagoda lies about 2 km from the landing. If you have one day, pick one of the two. With more time you can do both.
Mua Cave, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh
Mua Cave has a stone stairway up to a viewpoint over Tam Coc and the rice fields. Hoa Lu was the capital of Dai Co Viet from 968 to 1010. Bai Dinh pagoda is a large temple complex in the buffer zone of the heritage area. The three are often combined in one day, as on a Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi.
Storms, floods and boat operation
Boat rides at Trang An are part of the normal visitor offer. In a storm or flood the authority can pause routes or operations at short notice, so ask for the local status before you go. The number and course of the routes can also change. More on the pages for Trang An and weather in Ninh Binh.
Is Ninh Binh worth visiting
It depends on what you want from a few days in northern Vietnam.
Ninh Binh suits you if you like water, hills and slow movement more than a long list of museums. A boat ride, a climb at Mua Cave and a bike ride past the rice fields fill a day well, and the homestay area around Tam Coc and Trang An is described by the local tourism office as a base for cycling through villages. If you only want a fast photo stop, a day trip from Hanoi is enough. If you want to ride, walk or visit the national park, give it at least a night.

Where to stay in Ninh Binh
Three areas to consider and the homestay option.
Food, villages and slow travel
The regional dishes are mountain goat and com chay, a crispy rice crust. The rice is cooked, browned at the bottom of the pot, dried and fried before serving. Com chay can come with goat-meat sauce or pork floss, so it is not automatically vegetarian.
Beyond the headline sights, the local tourism office promotes village cycling and homestay stays around Tam Coc and Trang An. Add a quiet morning there to your boat and viewpoint days and you see a different side of the region.

Good to know
A few practical points that save surprises on the way.
The province is bigger than the karst region
Since 1 July 2025 the province includes Ha Nam and Nam Dinh. The sights on this site lie in the karst area around Trang An, Tam Coc and Hoa Lu.
UNESCO lists one complex
The heritage site is the Trang An Landscape Complex, which includes the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, Trang An, Tam Coc, Bich Dong and the Hoa Lu special-use forest. Bai Dinh lies in the buffer zone.
Hoa Lu →Fees are listed in dong
Sight tickets are published in VND. Carry enough cash for tickets and small purchases, because payment methods at each counter can differ.
Entrance fees at a glance →Storms and floods can change plans
In a storm or flood the authority can pause boat routes or other activities at short notice. Ask for the local status before the day you go.
Weather →Scooters need the right licence
Visitors need an international driving permit together with their national licence, and a standard class B licence does not cover vehicles above 50 cc. Do not leave your passport as a deposit.

Ninh Binh: frequently asked questions
How far is Ninh Binh from Hanoi?

Is one day enough in Ninh Binh?
One day covers Trang An or Tam Coc plus Mua Cave or Hoa Lu. For cycling, Bai Dinh or Cuc Phuong, stay at least one night. See the day trip from Hanoi and the itinerary.
When is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not the website of the provincial government, the tourism office or the management of the Trang An complex, and it does not run any tours itself.
