Hanoi to Ninh Binh: the main ways
Hanoi to Ninh Binh is a short trip. The national tourism authority puts it at about 2 hours by road or by rail, and it names Ninh Binh station as the arrival point for trains. That is a rough guide and not a door-to-door promise: traffic leaving Hanoi, the pick-up point and the last stretch to your stay all change the real time.
Ninh Binh has no airport of its own. The nearest is Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport (HAN), so most international visitors fly into Hanoi first and continue by road or rail. If you want to know how to get to Ninh Binh with the least planning, a hotel-to-hotel limousine bus or a private transfer is the easiest start; the train is a good choice if you like to travel by rail.

By limousine minibus
The limousine minibus is the most common way to reach Ninh Binh from the Hanoi Old Quarter. An operator describes the ride as about 1.5 hours, with lines that leave from several points in Hanoi and connect to local drop-offs. Single seats are listed at 155,000, 170,000, 180,000 or 200,000 VND depending on the listing and on whether you go to Ninh Binh city or to the area around Tam Coc, Trang An and Hang Mua. Fares change and differ between listings, so confirm the price when you book.
Some tickets pick you up at your hotel in the Old Quarter and drop you at your hotel in central Ninh Binh. Be at the lobby about 30 minutes before the chosen departure time and expect the operator to confirm the pick-up time. Luggage rules are strict on these tickets: one standard piece of 60 cm x 43 cm x 26 cm and one handbag per person, and a larger bag counts as two pieces.
By train
The railway timetable lists several trains a day between Hanoi and Ninh Binh, with a ride of a little over 2 hours. Check current departures and fares for your travel day on the railway booking site before you plan around a train, and pick the class that suits you. From Ninh Binh station you continue by taxi, bus or transfer to Tam Coc, Trang An or your homestay. The where to stay page explains which area is closest to the station.
Ninh Binh airport
Ninh Binh does not have an airport of its own. People searching for a Ninh Binh airport usually want Hanoi Noi Bai (HAN), the airport that serves Hanoi and the whole delta. Do not look for flights to Ninh Binh itself; book a flight to HAN and arrange the road leg afterwards.
Taxi and transfer from Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)
After a long flight, a private car from Noi Bai directly to your stay in Ninh Binh is the simplest option, especially with luggage or if you arrive late. A shared minibus from the airport is cheaper per person, but it works on its own schedule and drops you in a set area. Airport minibus fares run to several hundred thousand dong and differ between listings, so confirm the final fare when you book. A single airport guest can pay a pickup surcharge of 30,000 VND. Allow generous buffer time on the day.

Getting around Ninh Binh: heritage bus, bicycle, scooter
Once you are in Ninh Binh, the sights are spread out. An official announcement of 24 July 2026 describes a free heritage bus linking Trang An, Bai Dinh and Dong Chuong lake every 2 hours. It is not a Hanoi line, and the internal electric car at Bai Dinh is a separate paid service. Ask at the tourism office or on site whether the bus runs on your day and where it stops.
Many visitors rent a bicycle for the villages and rice fields, and some rent a scooter. For a scooter you need an international driving permit under the 1968 Vienna Convention together with your national licence. A standard car licence (class B) does not cover scooters above 50 cc, and the B196 licence is not recognised. Riding after drinking is not allowed, and the limit is zero, which also applies to cyclists. Do not hand over your passport as a deposit. More detail is on the cycling and motorbike page.
Arriving on a day tour
If you would rather not organise the road leg at all, a day tour from Hanoi handles it. See the Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi page for how the day is built, or browse the Ninh Binh tours if you start from the city. If you plan a stay of more than one day, the Ninh Binh itinerary shows how to split your time, and Ninh Binh weather helps with the best season to travel.
