Ninh Binh cycling: villages, rice fields and karst
Ninh Binh cycling suits a quiet half day. The tourism office describes cycling trips through villages and rice fields, and homestay stays around Tam Coc and Trang An as part of a slower way to see the region.
You can join a guided bike or e-bike tour, ride behind a driver on a motorbike, or ride yourself if you hold the right licence. The last choice has rules that visitors regularly get wrong, so read the licence section below before you rent.

Cycling through Tam Coc villages
Rice fields, village lanes and homestays.
The Tam Coc area is the usual base for bike trips. Rice fields reach the foot of the hills, and the official description of the region mentions homestay stays on the edge of both Tam Coc and Trang An. Rice around Tam Coc is reported golden in May and early June, but the exact days change each year, so plan for scenery rather than a fixed date. For the boat ride and the hill temple nearby, see our Tam Coc page.
E-bike tours
Pedal help for longer loops.
An e-bike tour from Ninh Binh lists a local companion, an electric bike, a helmet and a rain poncho. It also includes a tea break at an old temple and a home-cooked meal with a local family. The tour takes about four and a half hours, with free hotel pick-up inside a radius that depends on your group: 3 km for one guest, 5 km for two, 10 km for three or more, measured from the tour office in Ninh Binh.
A full-day guided bike tour in the Tam Coc area includes a bicycle, a local guide, visits to Thai Vi Temple and Bich Dong Pagoda, a boat through a cave to Dundj Valley and a seven-dish lunch. The Tam Coc boat ticket (250,000 VND) and Mua Cave entry (150,000 VND) are paid extra, and the cave boat in the tour is a different boat from the Tam Coc one. Pick-up is within the Tam Coc area only.

Riding yourself: licence rules
For visitors on a scooter or motorbike.
Two documents
German travel advice lists an international driving permit together with your national licence for short stays. The Vietnamese decree of 2024 sanctions riders who do not carry the national licence that matches the permit. Do not assume that any international licence sold online is recognised. The permit has to follow the Vienna Convention of 1968.
Engine size
Class B does not allow motorbikes or scooters above 50 cc, and B196 is not accepted. If your licence does not cover the bike, choose a tour with a driver instead.
Alcohol and deposits
The limit is 0 per mille, also for cyclists. Do not leave your passport as a rental deposit.
Renting a bicycle or scooter
What to ask before you pay.
Ask for the price per day, the deposit and what insurance covers before you pay, since rental terms vary from shop to shop. Test the brakes and take a photo of the bike when you pick it up. For help with getting around the sights without a bike, see our getting there guide or plan the days with the itinerary.
